- Навчальний рік почався у вересні. Шкільна форма була завелика, а портфель важкий. Учителька писала крейдою на шкільній дошці, а я боявся підняти руку. На великій перерві всі бігали коридором. Через місяць я вже читав вголос і не плутав гумку зі стругачкою. Тепер мій син іде в перший клас.The school year began in September. The school uniform was a bit too big, and the satchel was heavy. The teacher wrote with chalk on the blackboard, and I was afraid to raise my hand. At recess everyone ran along the corridor. A month later I was already reading aloud and no longer mixed up the eraser with the sharpener. Now my son is starting first grade.

How to read a text in an unfamiliar language usefully?
First all the way through without peeking at the translation — just to catch the familiar words. Then with the translation. Then all the way through again: the second pass brings noticeably more, and that feeling matters more than any rule.
