How it works
In business speech the calling form is not decoration — it is required, and a slip in it is noticed at once. To a man you do not know: pane. To a woman: pani, which never changes. The job title bends too: pane dyrektore, pane likariu, pani vchytelko, pane ministre. Imagine writing Dear Mister Directore and you have the feel of it. English stopped bending names centuries ago; the Ukrainian email never did.
To a colleague: koleho. To a group: kolehy or panove. A letter opens Shanovnyi pane Ivane!, Shanovna pani Oleno!, Shanovni kolehy!.
The sign-off is Z povahoiu — with respect — and it is the only everyday formula. Z naikrashchymy pobazhanniami exists but is rarer.
The patronymic bends along with the name: Ivane Petrovychu, Oleno Ivanivno. One bare name without the patronymic reads friendly; in a letter to a stranger, leave it out.
