Kokhaty and liubyty: two different feelings

How it works
English splits love from be in love with; Ukrainian splits the same ground and polices the border harder.
Kokhaty is romantic love for a person, and nothing else: ia tebe kokhaiu, zakokhatysia fall in love, kokhanyi beloved, kokhannia love itself. Say kokhaiu about soup and you have proposed to dinner.
Liubyty covers everything else: liubliu kavu, liubliu chytaty, liubliu mamu, liubliu tse misto. Parents and children take liubyty, always.
The adjectives follow the same line: kokhanyi is the beloved, liublenyi is the favorite — liublena strava, liublenyi film. Swap them and you confess feelings to a meal. The same splitting logic in other pairs. Druzhyna is wife, not squad. Cholovik is both husband and man, zhinka both wife and woman. Liudyna is a human being.
