Two tickets, piat kvytkiv: counting and shape
English nouns never move: two tickets, five tickets, same word. Ukrainian nouns have three shapes, and the last digit of the number picks the shape. For example: “У мене два брати і пʼять сестер” — I have two brothers and five sisters. A rule from the Ukrainian course: worked out on examples, not memorized as a wording.
How it works
English nouns never move: two tickets, five tickets, same word. Ukrainian nouns have three shapes, and the last digit of the number picks the shape.
After dva, try, chotyry the noun stands in the plural naming form: dva kvytky, try dni, chotyry stoly. After piat and up it takes the plural of form: piat kvytkiv, sim dniv, dvadtsiat stoliv. The words skilky how many, bahato many and malo few pull the same of form.
Compound numbers follow their last digit. Ones ending in 2, 3, 4 act like two: dvadtsiat dva kvytky. Ones ending in 1 act like one: dvadtsiat odyn kvytok.
Age works the same way, which is why it sounds different every time. Meni dva roky, meni piat rokiv, meni dvadtsiat odyn rik. Three shapes of one word, and the last digit decides.

How the rule settles in your head
A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.
