Zavelykyi and zvaryty: what prefixes do

Before an adjective the prefix za- means too much, and English already owns the trick: oversized, overpriced. Zavelykyi too big, zamalyi too small, zadorohyi too expensive, zarano too early, zapizno too late. One word beats two. For example: “Ця куртка мені завелика” — This jacket is too big for me. A rule from the Ukrainian course: worked out on examples, not memorized as a wording.

How it works

Before an adjective the prefix za- means too much, and English already owns the trick: oversized, overpriced. Zavelykyi too big, zamalyi too small, zadorohyi too expensive, zarano too early, zapizno too late. One word beats two.

On verbs, za- marks a start or a finish: zaspivaty start singing, zasnuty fall asleep, zaspokoitysia settle down.

Verbs come in pairs — the doing and the done — and a prefix builds the second one. Varyty → zvaryty, smazhyty → zasmazhyty, rizaty → porizaty, myty → pomyty, kushtuvaty → skushtuvaty. English spells the difference out in separate words; Ukrainian spells it inside the verb.

One spelling note: a prefix written s- is said z- before a voiced sound: zrobyty, zvaryty, zlamaty, zbyraty. Before k or t it stays: spytaty, skushtuvaty, skhopyty.

How the rule settles in your head

A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.
