Sidaty, liagaty: sit and lie with no -sia
English pads these verbs out — take a seat, lie down. Ukrainian keeps them plain, and a bolted-on -sia gives the speaker away as a visitor. Sidaty is to sit down: sidai, sidaiute, bud laska. There is no such word as sidatysia. For example: “Сідай ближче до вікна” — Come sit closer to the window. A rule from the Ukrainian course: worked out on examples, not memorized as a wording.
How it works
English pads these verbs out — take a seat, lie down. Ukrainian keeps them plain, and a bolted-on -sia gives the speaker away as a visitor. Sidaty is to sit down: sidai, sidaiute, bud laska. There is no such word as sidatysia.
Liagaty is to lie down: liagai spaty, vin lih. And memorize separately: putting something somewhere is klasty, putting it down is poklasty — poklady kliuchi na polytsiu.
The morning verbs are the opposite: there -sia is not optional. The bare verb is meaningless: prokydatysia, umyvatysia, odiagatysia, rozdiagatysia, zachisuvatysia, holitysia.
The logic is simple. -Sia stands where the action folds back onto the doer — you wash yourself. It stays away where it never could, as with sitting down. A third group uses -sia to change the meaning: vchyty teaches someone, vchytysia is being the student.

How the rule settles in your head
A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.
