How it works
Passing on what someone said is easier than it looks, because Ukrainian skips the chore English dreads: tenses do not shift. What was said in the present stays in the present. Ia pratsiuiu tut becomes Vin skazav, shcho pratsiue tut, with no backshift anywhere.
A question keeps its question word, and the word order straightens out: De ty zhyvesh? turns into Ona zapytala, de ia zhyvu. The question mark disappears, the comma is mandatory. With no question word, chy steps in: Ty pryidesh? becomes Vin zapytav, chy ia pryidu.
Requests and orders go through shchob plus the past: Vin poprosyv, shchob ia zachekav. A bare infinitive works too: poprosyv zachekaty.
And a word for doubt: niby or nibyto flags the claim as second-hand. Ia chuv, niby kramnytsiu zakryvaiut means I would not swear to it.
