Z, zi, iz: one preposition, three shapes
The preposition is one; its shape follows what stands next to it, and the ear picks it so consonants never collide. A wrong shape changes nothing in meaning, but it grates at once. For example: “Він повернувся з роботи пізно” — He got back from work late. A rule from the Ukrainian course: worked out on examples, not memorized as a wording.
How it works
The preposition is one; its shape follows what stands next to it, and the ear picks it so consonants never collide. A wrong shape changes nothing in meaning, but it grates at once.
Z is the everyday form, before vowels and single consonants: z nulia, z domu, z roboty, z Ukrainy. Zi steps in before a pile of consonants, especially when the first one hisses: zi sliv, zi zla, zi shkoly, zi skhodu.
Iz appears when the word before ends in a consonant and the next one starts with one. So: buv iz bratom, khlib iz maslom, uziav iz zapasom.
The same flow rule runs through other little words. U and v: u misti, but v Odesi. I and y: brat i sestra, but sestra y brat. Ukrainian dodges two consonants or two vowels in a row wherever it can. The same reflex splits a and an in English.
Table

| zi | before a consonant cluster | zi sliv, zi shkoly |
| iz | between two consonants | khlib iz maslom |

- Він повернувся з роботи пізноHe got back from work late
- Зі слів сусіда, світло вимкнули вранціAccording to the neighbor, the lights went off in the morning
- Візьми грошей із запасомTake some spare cash with you
How the rule settles in your head
A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.
Frequently asked
Z, zi or iz: picking the right shape?
The preposition is one; its shape follows what stands next to it, and the ear picks it so consonants never collide. A wrong shape changes nothing in meaning, but it grates at once.
What does it look like in an example sentence Ukrainian?
“Він повернувся з роботи пізно” — He got back from work late. A rule is easier to test on sentences like this than to memorize as a wording: what surfaces in conversation is the sentence.
