Not a single lamp burned, the newspaper lay at the entrance. I thought: apparently he is not in town. The shopkeeper said that, they say, his daughter came once. In that case, I thought, he must be in hospital — so my conjecture appeared. But nothing can be said at random; honestly, I knew nothing. Just in case I wrote him a short letter and slid it under the door. Four days later he returned. It turned out he had been living in Colombo at his daughter's — no illness at all. Having read my letter, he laughed: he said that to learn someone notices your absence is already a big thing. That is, even if the conjecture was wrong, the letter was not in vain.
