On top a dusty wrapper, beneath it a wooden crate. The edge of the crate was chipped; there was a hole in the lid. We emptied the contents onto the table. A row of old photographs, faded fabric, crumpled letters. On the prints only outlines were visible — the faces could not be made out. There was also a small glass cup; it is still whole to this day. Mother touched it and said: this is grandmother's cup, the thing is fragile, put it carefully. The rest we sorted separately: one heap — to keep, another heap — to throw away. In the end there turned out to be only a dozen good things. But for the sake of that one cup opening the box was worth it — so it seemed to everyone.
