We decided to go not by the usual street but straight across the field. At first all was well: palm trees along the edges of the field, a temple in the distance. After an hour not a single landmark could be seen. I understood we were lost. One friend of mine fell a little behind, another went ahead. I shouted, and he stopped to wait. Finally we saw a big tree and decided it was our landmark. Past the tree we went down a narrow path. That path ended in a dead end. We turned around, went up, and came out to the field again. We thought a shortcut would save an hour; and we spent two hours more. That is how one learns — with one's feet, not with calculation.
