The majority are Tamil-speaking families, the minority Muslim. All together we keep a residents' association. Every month on one of the Saturdays we clean the street and the playground. Last time twenty volunteers came; the trash was sent for recycling. Next to the kindergarten there is a fountain; it had not worked for a year. We collected donations and repaired it. Unemployment is high here too, so the association runs computer classes for the young. To poor families we give out rice every month. The power, maybe, belongs to the state, but keeping the town clean is, we believe, our business.
