Text

  • Kadil sem petnajst let in vsako jutro sem začel s kavo in cigareto.
I smoked for fifteen years and every morning started with coffee and a cigarette. Last year, after an examination, the doctor told me I had inflammation in my lungs. He said smoking harms the heart too, and advised me to quit. The first week without cigarettes was the hardest; insomnia tormented me at night. Now I run three times a week and feel better than at thirty. In vain I used to think I couldn’t manage without that bad habit.

Comprehension questions

The questions are asked in Russian on purpose: we test your understanding of the text, not your ability to read the question.

  2. What did the doctor find?
  3. What tormented him the first week?
  4. What does he do now?

Frequently asked

What level do you need to read this text in Slovenian?

B1. That means: you know the letters and have a stock of everyday words — about two or three hundred.

How to read a text in an unfamiliar language usefully?

First all the way through without peeking at the translation — just to catch the familiar words. Then with the translation. Then all the way through again: the second pass brings noticeably more, and that feeling matters more than any rule.
