- Vozniški izpit sem delal pri devetindvajsetih, veliko pozneje kot prijatelji. Inštruktor mi je rekel, naj vozim mirno, sicer bom naredil napako iz živčnosti. Na izpitu se je izkazalo, da je najtežji del parkiranje med dvema avtomobiloma. Zavil sem preveč na desno, a sem se popravil in ocenjevalec ni rekel nič. Kolikor vem, pri nas vsaj polovica ljudi izpita ne opravi v prvo. Meni je uspelo v prvo, najbrž zato, ker sem vadil vsak konec tedna.I took my driving exam at twenty-nine, much later than my friends. The instructor told me to drive calmly, otherwise I would make a mistake out of nerves. At the exam it turned out that the hardest thing was parking between two cars. I steered too far right, but corrected myself, and the examiner said nothing. As far as I know, at least half of people here don’t pass the first time. I managed the first time, probably because I practiced every weekend.

How to read a text in an unfamiliar language usefully?
First all the way through without peeking at the translation — just to catch the familiar words. Then with the translation. Then all the way through again: the second pass brings noticeably more, and that feeling matters more than any rule.
