Ես (yes) — I. sounds exactly like the English word 'yes': the letter ե at the start of a word gives 'ye'
Մահճակալ (mahjagal) — bed. ma-ja-GAL, with the stress on the last syllable — the ճ sounds like j as in 'jam'
Օճառ (ojarr) — soap. o-JARR, with a full trill on the final ռ — let the r rattle a beat longer than an English r
Ծերունի (dzeruni) — old man. the opening ծ is a buzzing dz, like the ds in 'kids': dze-roo-NEE
Ճաշ (jash) — lunch. the ճ sounds like j as in 'jam': 'jash'
Ընթրիք (ənt'rik') — dinner. the opening ը is barely audible: the word comes out n'-TRIK', with a puff of air on the k at the end
Քիթ (k'it') — nose. k'-eet': the air escapes at both ends, the ք up front and the թ at the close each come with a puff
Կուրծք (gurdzk') — chest. goor-dzk': three final consonants in a row, with no vowel offering to help
How to work on pronunciation on your own
Listening and repeating aloud is not a platitude — it is the only technique available without a teacher. Saying words out loud gives a small but measured gain over silent reading, and it is also the only way to notice that your mouth is not shaping a sound your ear already tells apart.
