The rule is short: a one-syllable word takes -եր, a longer one takes -ներ. tsarr → tsarrer, doms → domser, k'arr → k'arrer. But alik' → alik'ner, kendani → kendaniner, jambrug → jambrugner. You count the syllables exactly once per word; after that it is memorized whole.
Syllables are counted by sound, not by letters. Words ending in -ութիւն are always long: urakhut'yun → urakhut'yunner. But us or goyn — one syllable, and the ending is the short one.
The exceptions are few but frequent: mart → մարդիկ (martig) — martik (people), kin → ganayk' (women), tikin → tiknayk'. They are easier to learn as separate words.
And the main thing that makes a phrase sound strange to a beginner: after a number there is no plural. Yergu doms, not "yergu domser". Hing or, dasə mart, yerek' ap'se. The number has already said how many, and the word need not repeat it. The same after քանի՞ (k'ani) — k'ani՞ or, how many days.
