Why it looks that way

Takes the "of" form: posered kimnaty, "in the middle of the room", posered nochi, "in the middle of the night". The middle is seredyna; Wednesday is sereda — one vowel apart.

A word with a story stays in memory longer than one learned as a “spelling — translation” pair: memory holds on to meaning, not to a string.
