Ukrainian keeps its in-laws sorted far more precisely than English does, and these words come up constantly at any family table.
The husband's side: svekrukha his mother, svekor his father. The wife's side: teshcha her mother, test her father. Mixing them up insults both families at once. Those who married in: ziat is a daughter's or sister's husband, nevistka a son's or brother's wife.
A sibling's children: nebizh and neboga, short native words; the longer bookish pair pleminnyk and pleminnytsia also exists but is heard less. Step-relatives: machukha spelled with u, vitchym spelled with i.
And one word for the whole crowd at once: ridnia, a collective singular: z'yikhalasia vsia ridnia. Meanwhile rodyna simply means the family.
