Navasni, vlitku, voseny, vzymku: the four seasons

English says in spring with two words; Ukrainian goes further and solders preposition and word into a single adverb. Navasni in spring, vlitku in summer, voseny in autumn, vzymku in winter. Written solid, never declined. For example: “Навесні тут усе зацвітає” — In spring everything blooms here. A rule from the Ukrainian course: worked out on examples, not memorized as a wording.

How it works

English says in spring with two words; Ukrainian goes further and solders preposition and word into a single adverb. Navasni in spring, vlitku in summer, voseny in autumn, vzymku in winter. Written solid, never declined.

Three of the four show a vowel swap in the root. Vesna → navasni, lito → vlitku, osin → voseny (the i turns into e), zyma → vzymku.

The parts of the day work identically: vrantsi in the morning, vden by day, uvecheri in the evening, vnochi at night. Note nich → vnochi: that i becomes o.

Months refuse the trick: there is no one-word in-January. Say u sichni, u travni, with u plus the place form. And the season itself is pora roku, literally the time of the year — the phrase every weather chat falls back on.

How the rule settles in your head

A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.
