Weather, days and dates: u ponedilok, torik

Weather talk has no subject: kholodno, spekotno, voloho, prokholodno — cold, hot, muggy, crisp, each one a full sentence in a word. Rain and snow simply walk: ide dosh, ide snih, the rain is coming. For example: “У суботу буде дощ” — It will rain on Saturday. A rule from the Ukrainian course: worked out on examples, not memorized as a wording.

How it works

Weather talk has no subject: kholodno, spekotno, voloho, prokholodno — cold, hot, muggy, crisp, each one a full sentence in a word. Rain and snow simply walk: ide dosh, ide snih, the rain is coming.

A weekday takes u plus the object form: u ponedilok, u seredu, u piatnytsiu. For every Monday, fold it into one word with shcho-: shchoponedilka, shchodia, shchotyzhnia.

Months and years go in the of form with no preposition: ts'oho tyzhnia, nastupnoho misiatsia, mynuloho roku. For last year there is a one-word shortcut: torik.

The month names are native, not borrowed Latin, and they mislead the eye. Sichen is January, lypen is July. Lystopad, the leaf-fall month, is November, and traven is May. Learn the list as a list; guessing picks the wrong season.

How the rule settles in your head

A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.
