How it works
Ukrainian has three words for "and", and you pick by sound, not meaning.
i is the default: kava i khlib — coffee and bread. y shows up after a vowel, so two vowels never crash together: mama y tato — mom and dad. ta adds variety, or steps in when "i" already appeared nearby: den i nich, sino ta vikno — a saying you will hear.
Also meet chy: it turns a sentence into a question (Chy tse kava? — is this coffee?) and between two words it means "or": kava chy chay? — coffee or tea?
