Ecology cannot be spoken without this: 'greening', 'pollution', 'recycling', 'observation' — all these are nouns from verbs, and there are four suffixes.
-அல் / -தல்: the bare noun of an action. பசுமையாக்கு to green — பசுமையாக்கல் (pasumaiyākkal) greening, பின்தங்கு to lag — பின்தங்கல் (piṉdaṅgal) lag, அறிவுறுத்து to instruct — அறிவுறுத்தல் (aṟivuṟuttal) instruction, சறுக்கு to slip — சறுக்கல் (saṟukkal) slipping. The form is bookish; there is more of it in the newspaper than in speech.
-இப்பு / -ப்பு: a result or a property. அவதானி to observe — அவதானிப்பு (avadāṉippu) observation, சேமி to save — சேமிப்பு (sēmippu) savings, தயாரி to make — தயாரிப்பு (tayārippu) product, பங்களி to take part — பங்களிப்பு (paṅgaḷippu) contribution. This is the liveliest of the four suffixes.
-ஈடு (-īḍu): a single completed act. அள to measure — அளவீடு (aḷavīḍu) a measurement, மதிப்பி to assess — மதிப்பீடு (madippīḍu) an assessment, குறியி to mark — குறியீடு (kuṟiyīḍu) a mark. The shade: not a process but one accomplished act with a result.
-மை / -தன்மை: a quality, not an action. நிலை (nilai) — நிலைத்தன்மை (nilaittaṉmai) stability, பல வகை (pala vagai) — பல்வகைமை (palvagaimai) diversity, சகிப்பு — சகிப்புத்தன்மை (sagipputtaṉmai) endurance. These are made from nouns, not verbs, and the English '-ness' is their exact pair.
Why it is worth knowing. Half the words of the unit need not be memorized but can be assembled: knowing மறுசுழற்சி (maṟusuḻaṟci) recycling, you get மறுசுழற்சிப் பொருள் (maṟusuḻaṟcip poruḷ) recyclables; knowing கழி to discard, you get கழிவு (kaḻivu) waste and கழிவு நீர் (kaḻivu nīr) sewage. The Tamil ecological vocabulary is built from a dozen roots, and you already know those roots.
