How it works
The fifty-ninth unit begins with ten abstract nouns — 'kindness', 'endurance', 'egoism', 'laziness'. In English these are separate words with unpredictable roots. In Tamil nine of ten are assembled from a person or a feature plus a suffix, and there are exactly three suffixes.
-த்தனம்: the property of one who is such. The name of a person is taken: சோம்பேறி (sōmbēṟi) an idler — சோம்பேறித்தனம் (sōmbēṟittaṉam) laziness, முட்டாள் a fool — முட்டாள்தனம் foolishness, பொறாமைக்காரன் an envious man — பொறாமைத்தனம் envy. The shade is almost always condemning: words in -த்தனம் are rarely said to the face.
-மை: a pure quality, without condemnation. நேர் straight — நேர்மை (nērmai) honesty, பொறு to endure — பொறுமை (poṟumai) patience, பல வகை (pala vagai) — பல்வகைமை (palvagaimai) diversity. This is the same suffix you saw in unit 56.
-தன்மை: a property from a noun, bookish. சகிப்பு — சகிப்புத்தன்மை (sagipputtaṉmai) endurance, நிலை (nilai) — நிலைத்தன்மை (nilaittaṉmai) stability. Longer and more official than -மை.
And there is a path without a suffix — through மனசு (maṉasu). Half the traits of character in live speech are described through the heart: நல்ல மனசு (nalla maṉasu) kindness, உதவுற மனசுள்ள (udavuṟa maṉasuḷḷa) responsive, சட்டெண்டு மனசு நோகிற (saṭṭeṇḍu maṉasu nōgiṟa) quick to take offense, மனசு தேத்திக்கிறேன் (maṉasu tēttikkiṟēṉ) to make peace with it. If the bookish word does not come to mind — assemble it through மனசு, and you will be understood more precisely.
What a person is like — a participle, not an adjective. வெட்கப்படுற (veṭkappaḍuṟa) shy — 'who feels shy', இணங்கிப் போற (iṇaṅgip pōṟa) easy-going — 'who goes along with agreement', யூகிக்க ஏலாத (yūgikka ēlāda) unpredictable — 'whom one cannot guess'. Tamil describes a person by what he does, not by what he is like.
