At first I began on my own, with a dictionary. I thought learning the letters would be hard, but they came easily. Grammar, though, is hard for me. Then I enrolled in courses. Our trainer makes two or three remarks at every lesson; at first I was ashamed, but now I know that this is exactly my progress. Now I can read and understand by ear. But to speak fluently I need more practice. I go step by step; with every time, better.

How to read a text in an unfamiliar language usefully?
First all the way through without peeking at the translation — just to catch the familiar words. Then with the translation. Then all the way through again: the second pass brings noticeably more, and that feeling matters more than any rule.
