Text

  • Ob nedeljah pri nas doma kuhava z bratom skupaj. Najprej olupiva zelenjavo: krompir, korenje in dva stroka česna.
On Sundays my brother and I cook together at home. First we peel the vegetables: potatoes, carrots and two cloves of garlic. We boil the water, add beef and leave the soup on a small flame. Meanwhile I beat three eggs for pancakes and add a little milk. If the batter is too thick, I add water and mix everything well. At the end I lay the tablecloth, and my brother hands out the plates and says “enjoy your meal”.

Comprehension questions

The questions are asked in Russian on purpose: we test your understanding of the text, not your ability to read the question.

  1. Who cooks on Sundays?
  2. What do they do first?
  3. What is added if the batter is too thick?
  4. What does the brother do at the end?

Frequently asked

What level do you need to read this text in Slovenian?

A2. That means: you know the letters and have a stock of everyday words — about two or three hundred.

How to read a text in an unfamiliar language usefully?

First all the way through without peeking at the translation — just to catch the familiar words. Then with the translation. Then all the way through again: the second pass brings noticeably more, and that feeling matters more than any rule.
