Կարդացած գիրք, երգող աղջիկ: a modifier instead of a clause

The forties taught you to link thoughts with the conjunction որ: 'գիրքը, որ կարդացի'. That is correct and always works. But living Armenian text — about a book, a film, an exhibition — almost never speaks that way: it puts a participle in front of the noun, and a whole relative clause shrinks into one modifier. How it works

The forties taught you to link thoughts with the conjunction որ (vor): 'գիրքը (girk'ə), որ կարդացի (vor kardatsi)'. That is correct and always works. But living Armenian text — about a book, a film, an exhibition — almost never speaks that way: it puts a participle in front of the noun, and a whole relative clause shrinks into one modifier.

-ած — done, past. The past stem plus -ած: կարդալ (kardal) → կարդացած (read), գրել (grel) → գրած (written), տեսնել (tesnel) → տեսած (seen). Կարդացած գիրքը (kardatsats girk'ə) — the book that was read. It is the most frequent form, and it also covers English 'that I read': իմ կարդացած գիրքը (im kardatsats girk'ə) — the book I read.

-ող — doing, present. The same suffix that made 'գրող (grogh)' and 'վաճառող (vacharrogh)'. As a participle it means 'the one who does': երգող աղջիկը (yergogh aghjikə) — the girl singing, բեմում խաղող դերասանը (bemum khaghogh derasanə) — the actor playing on stage. Watch the order, because this is where English misleads: English allows a bare participle in front ('the singing girl') but throws the whole phrase behind the noun as soon as anything is added to it ('the girl singing on stage'). Armenian never does that. Everything that belongs to the participle stays before it, and the participle stays before the noun — 'on-stage playing the-actor'. Put the phrase after the noun the English way and the sentence falls apart.

-վող and -ված — the passives. Գրվող նամակը — the letter being written; գրված նամակը (grvats namakə) — the letter that was written. The first is about now, the second about the result. Թարգմանված վեպ (t'argmanvats vep) — a translated novel, թողարկված ալբոմ — a released album.

-ելու and -ելիք — what is yet to come. Կարդալու գիրք — a book to read; խմելու ջուր (khmelu jur) — drinking water (this word was already in the forty-second unit); ասելիք — things to say. The form is bookish, but on posters and notices it shows up often.

When որ after all. The participle compresses only what English could compress too: when the head noun is the subject or the direct object. If the clause contains something extra ('the book we talked ABOUT', 'the city I went TO'), the participle cannot cope, and you need որ with a postposition: գիրքը, որի մասին խոսում էինք. The rule is simple: if English needs 'which / that' with a preposition, the participle will not do.

How the rule settles in your head

A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.

What does it look like in an example sentence Armenian?

“Կարդացած վեպը վերադարձրու գրադարան” (kardatsats vepə veradardzru gradaran) — Return the finished novel to the library. A rule is easier to test on sentences like this than to memorize as a wording: what surfaces in conversation is the sentence.
