How it works
Until this wave the course counted exactly to ten. For 'two tickets' and 'five days' that was enough, but the forty-fifth unit opens by demanding 'twenty-three kilograms' and 'five thousand meters'. Good news: Armenian numbers are more transparent than English ones, and you learn them once.
From eleven to nineteen — 'ten-plus'. Տասնմեկ (tasnmek), տասներկու (tasnerku), տասներեք (tasnerek'), տասնչորս (tasnchors), տասնհինգ (tasnhing), տասնվեց (tasnvets), տասնյոթ (tasnyot'), տասնութ (tasnut'), տասնինը (tasninə). All written as one word, with տասն- (tasn) in front. No 'eleven' with its unguessable root: if you know տասը (tasə) and երեք (yerek'), you already know տասներեք.
The tens. Քսան (20), երեսուն (30), քառասուն (40), հիսուն (50), վաթսուն (60), յոթանասուն (70), ութսուն (80), իննսուն (90). From forty on you can hear the original number inside: քառ- from չորս (chors), յոթանա- from յոթ (yot'), ութ- (ut') from ութ (ut'). A compound number is written as one word: քսաներեք (k'sanerek') — twenty-three, քառասունհինգ — forty-five. Then come հարյուր (100), հազար (1000), միլիոն (milion); hundreds and thousands, on the contrary, are written separately: հարյուր հիսուն (haryur hisun), երկու հազար քսան (yerku hazar k'san). And zero — զրո (zro).
The noun after a number stays singular. Հինգ մետր (hing metr), քսան սանտիմետր (k'san santimetr), հարյուր գրամ (haryur gram) — the wave-four note on quantity said exactly this, and with measures the rule works without exceptions.
Ordinals — the ending -րդ. Երկրորդ (yerkrord), երրորդ (yerrord), չորրորդ (chorrord), հինգերորդ (hingerord), տասներորդ (tasnerord), քսաներորդ. There is one exception, and it is the most frequent word of all: 'first' — առաջին (arrajin), with no -րդ at all. A date goes into the dative: մարտի ութին (marti ut'in) — on the eighth of March, ամսի տասնհինգին (amsi tasnhingin) — on the fifteenth. A decade takes the suffix -ական: ութսունականներ — the eighties.
Fractions and multiples. Կես (kes) — half, քառորդ (k'arrord) — quarter, մեկուկես (mekukes) — one and a half ('one-and-half'). Percentages — տոկոս (tokos): տասը տոկոս (tasə tokos). Multiples go through անգամ (angam): երկու անգամ ավելի (yerku angam aveli) — twice as much, երեք անգամ քիչ (yerek' angam k'ich) — three times less. And a useful suffix -անոց, which turns a number into a thing of that size: հինգհարյուրանոց — a five-hundred note, երկտեղանոց սենյակ (yerkteghanots senyak) — a double room, տասնհարկանի շենք — a ten-story building.
