Թող լինի, Աստված պահի, ապրես: the wish is a verb form of its own
At an Armenian table staying silent is not an option, and saying 'congratulations' and sitting down is not enough. The language has dozens of well-wishes, and nearly all of them are gathered in one verb form — the same one that stands after պետք է and after որպեսզի: without the կ- prefix. On its own, that form already means 'may it be so'. For example: “Աստված պահի ձեր երեխաներին” — God keep your children. A rule…
How it works
At an Armenian table staying silent is not an option, and saying 'congratulations' and sitting down is not enough. The language has dozens of well-wishes, and nearly all of them are gathered in one verb form — the same one that stands after պետք է (petk' e) and after որպեսզի (vorpeszi): without the կ- prefix. On its own, that form already means 'may it be so'.
The form without կ- is already a wish. Աստված պահի (astvats pahi) — God keep (not 'կպահի'!), առողջ մնաս (arroghj mnas) — stay healthy, շնորհավոր լինի (shnorhavor lini) — may it be a happy one, հաջողություն ունենաս — good luck to you. Compare: կմնաս — 'you will stay', a statement about the future; մնաս (mnas) — 'stay', a wish. One letter of difference, and it is the important one — English reaches for 'may' or for a whole new verb; Armenian simply drops կ-.
Թող (t'ogh) — 'let' for the third person. Թող գա (t'ogh ga) — let him come, թող լինի (t'ogh lini) — let it be, թող երեխաները խաղան — let the children play. Թող itself is the imperative of թողնել (to leave), that is, word for word 'leave him to come'. The negative is թող չ-: թող չուշանա.
Ready-made formulas that are not translated word for word. Ապրես (apres) — literally 'live!', in practice the same as 'thanks' between one's own people. Անուշ լինի (anush lini) — bon appetit, answered with առողջ մնաս. Կենացդ — to your life (a toast; կյանք (kyank') — life). Ցավդ տանեմ — 'may I carry your pain', the warmest address in the language, though to the unaccustomed ear it sounds like a threat. Շնորհավոր (shnorhavor) + what you congratulate on: շնորհավոր ծնունդդ (shnorhavor tsnundd), where -դ means 'your'.
And what is said in grief. Ցավակցում եմ — I share your pain. Աստված հոգին լուսավորի — may God illuminate the soul, the Armenian 'rest in peace'. Ուժ տա Աստված (uzh ta astvats) — may God give strength. All three are the same form without կ-, and that is the whole trick: learn one form — and you can hold a feast, a wedding and a funeral.

How the rule settles in your head
A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.

What does it look like in an example sentence Armenian?
“Աստված պահի ձեր երեխաներին” (astvats pahi dzer yerekhanerin) — God keep your children. A rule is easier to test on sentences like this than to memorize as a wording: what surfaces in conversation is the sentence.
