Մարդիկ, կանայք, ժողովուրդ: the plural that breaks the rule
The second unit gave the plural rule: a one-syllable word takes -եր, a multi-syllable one takes -ներ. The rule works and covers ninety-five words out of a hundred. The forty-second unit is all about people — and words about people are exactly where the rule most often breaks. For example: “Այս գյուղում հազար մարդ է ապրում, մարդիկ իրար ճանաչում են” — A thousand people live in this village, and they all know one…
How it works
The second unit gave the plural rule: a one-syllable word takes -եր, a multi-syllable one takes -ներ. The rule works and covers ninety-five words out of a hundred. The forty-second unit is all about people — and words about people are exactly where the rule most often breaks.
Five irregulars to know by heart. Մարդ (person) → մարդիկ (mardik), not 'մարդեր'. Կին (woman) → կանայք. Տղամարդ (man) → տղամարդիկ. Երեխա (child) → երեխաներ (yerekhaner) is fine, but մանուկ → մանկիկներ changes its root. And տիկին (lady) → տիկնայք. The forms in -այք are few in the language and all about people: a relic of an ancient ending that survived in the most frequent words.
Collectives: one word for many people. Ժողովուրդ (a people), բնակչություն (population), հասարակություն (society), մեծամասնություն (majority), բանակ (army), ընտանիք (family) — these are singular, and the verb with them is singular too: բնակչությունը աճում է (bnakchut'yunə achum e), not 'աճում են (achum en)'. English behaves the same way ('the population is growing'), so it is hard to go wrong — but in the plural these words change meaning: ժողովուրդներ is already 'peoples', distinct nations, not 'people'.
How to count the people inside a collective. Here Armenian is handier than English: there is a word հոգի (hogi) — soul — and it works as a counter-word for people, the way English says 'ten head of cattle', only polite. Տասը հոգի (tasə hogi) — ten people, քանի՞ հոգի եք (k'ani hogi ek') — how many of you are there? The form հոգանոց (hoganots) turns it into an attribute: տասը հոգանոց թիմ (tasə hoganots t'im) — a ten-person team. Տասը մարդ (tasə mard) is possible, but տասը հոգի sounds more natural.
And the rule that saves you. After a number the Armenian noun stands in the singular: հինգ բնակիչ (hing bnakich), քսան քաղաքացի (k'san k'aghak'atsi), հարյուր կամավոր (haryur kamavor) — without -ներ. English does this only inside compounds ('a five-story building'); Armenian does it everywhere, and after a month it feels like a relief: counting in Armenian is simpler, with no singular/plural decision after each number.

How the rule settles in your head
A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.
Frequently asked
the plural that breaks the rule: how does it work in Armenian?
The second unit gave the plural rule: a one-syllable word takes -եր, a multi-syllable one takes -ներ. The rule works and covers ninety-five words out of a hundred. The forty-second unit is all about people — and words about people are exactly where the rule most often breaks.
What does it look like in an example sentence Armenian?
“Այս գյուղում հազար մարդ է ապրում, մարդիկ իրար ճանաչում են” (ays gyughum hazar mard e aprum, mardik irar chanachum en) — A thousand people live in this village, and they all know one another. A rule is easier to test on sentences like this than to memorize as a wording: what surfaces in conversation is the sentence.
