Two weeks of silence

A short in Armenian text at level B1. The translation sits next to it: reading with a dictionary is still too early at this level, and without support it will not happen at all. Last month my friend and I quarreled, and for two weeks we didn't talk. Everything started with a small thing: I was…

Text

Last month my friend and I quarreled, and for two weeks we didn't talk. Everything started with a small thing: I was irritated and scolded him in front of everyone. He was hurt and said I was blaming him for someone else's mistake. Then I felt ashamed, but I was too shy to call first. The loneliness was heavy, and I missed our conversations very much. Finally I wrote to him that it had been a misunderstanding, and asked for forgiveness. He answered an hour later: “I understand you, I shouldn't have kept silent either.” We made up, and now I understand that sometimes one needs to yield.

Comprehension questions

The questions are asked in Russian on purpose: we test your understanding of the text, not your ability to read the question.

  1. What did the quarrel start with?
  2. Why didn't the narrator call first?
  3. How did the narrator explain what happened in the letter?
  4. What conclusion did he come to?

Frequently asked

What level do you need to read this text in Armenian?

B1. That means: you know the letters and have a stock of everyday words — about two or three hundred.

How to read a text in an unfamiliar language usefully?

First all the way through without peeking at the translation — just to catch the familiar words. Then with the translation. Then all the way through again: the second pass brings noticeably more, and that feeling matters more than any rule.
