- Ayda bir toplanıyoruz; herkes bir roman ya da öykü kitabı okuyup geliyor. Geçen ay bir yazarın ilk kitabını okuduk: olay örgüsü basit ama kahramanı unutulmuyor. Toplantıda önce sevdiğimiz bir alıntıyı okuyoruz, sonra tartışıyoruz; kimse kimsenin sözünü kesmiyor. Bir arkadaşımız artık sadece e-kitap okuyor, biri de yolda podcast dinlemeyi tercih ediyor. Sonunda oy veriyoruz: gelecek ayın türü polisiye mi olsun, belgesel bir kitap mı?We meet once a month; everyone comes having read a novel or a story collection. Last month we read a writer's first book: the plot is simple, but the character isn't forgotten. At the meeting we first read a quote we liked, then discuss; no one interrupts anyone. One of our company now reads only e-books, and another prefers listening to a podcast on the way. At the end we vote: which genre to take for next month — detective fiction or a documentary book?

How to read a text in an unfamiliar language usefully?
First all the way through without peeking at the translation — just to catch the familiar words. Then with the translation. Then all the way through again: the second pass brings noticeably more, and that feeling matters more than any rule.
