  • Pazar sabahı mahalle takımıyla maçımız vardı; önce yarım saat ısınma yaptık. Hakem düdüğü çaldı ve ilk yarıda skor sıfır sıfırdı. İkinci yarıda topa sert vurdum, gol oldu; tribünde on beş taraftar bağırdı. Sonunda maç beraberlikle bitti, ama kimse üzülmedi: geçen hafta ağır bir yenilgi almıştık. Maçtan sonra soyunma odasında duş aldık ve gelecek ayki turnuvaya katılmaya karar verdik.
On Sunday morning we had a match with the neighborhood team; first we warmed up for half an hour. The referee blew the whistle, and in the first half the score was nil-nil. In the second half I hit the ball hard and it became a goal; fifteen fans shouted in the stands. In the end the match ended in a draw, but no one was upset: last week we had suffered a heavy defeat. After the match we showered in the changing room and decided to take part in the tournament next month.

Comprehension questions

The questions are asked in Russian on purpose: we test your understanding of the text, not your ability to read the question.

  2. What was the score in the first half?
  3. How did the match end?
  4. What did they decide after the match?

Frequently asked

What level do you need to read this text in Turkish?

A2. That means: you know the letters and have a stock of everyday words — about two or three hundred.

How to read a text in an unfamiliar language usefully?

First all the way through without peeking at the translation — just to catch the familiar words. Then with the translation. Then all the way through again: the second pass brings noticeably more, and that feeling matters more than any rule.
