A short in Turkish text at level A2. The translation sits next to it: reading with a dictionary is still too early at this level, and without support it will not happen at all. On the holiday morning we got up early and first visited the elders. Grandfather gave the grandchildren holiday money…
Text
- Bayram sabahı erken kalktık ve önce büyükleri ziyaret ettik. Dedem torunlara bayram harçlığı verdi, ninem herkese şeker ikram etti. Öğleden sonra evi süsledik: balon astık, sofrayı kurduk ve komşuları çağırdık. Akşam yemeğinde millî yemeğimizi pişirdik ve herkes bir dilek söyledi. Bizde bayramda ayakkabıları kapıda çıkarmak ve büyüklere saygı göstermek âdettendir. On the holiday morning we got up early and first visited the elders. Grandfather gave the grandchildren holiday money, grandmother treated everyone to candies. After lunch we decorated the house: hung up balloons, set the table and invited the neighbors. For dinner we cooked our national dish, and everyone said a wish. With us it's customary on the holiday to take off shoes at the door and show respect to the elders.

Frequently asked
What level do you need to read this text in Turkish?
A2. That means: you know the letters and have a stock of everyday words — about two or three hundred.
How to read a text in an unfamiliar language usefully?
First all the way through without peeking at the translation — just to catch the familiar words. Then with the translation. Then all the way through again: the second pass brings noticeably more, and that feeling matters more than any rule.
