English measures in two ways at once: 'two meters' but 'two meters long', 'a kilo in weight'. How it works
English measures in two ways at once: 'two meters' but 'two meters long', 'a kilo in weight'. Tamil gets by with one, and it must be memorized once: number — measure — noun, and nothing between them changes. ரெண்டு மீற்றர் கயிறு (reṇḍu mīṟṟar kayiṟu) 'a rope of two meters', ஒரு லீற்றர் பால் (oru līṟṟar pāl) 'a liter of milk', நூறு கிராம் மிளகாய் (nūṟu kirām miḷagāy) 'a hundred grams of chili'. The measure is always singular: பத்து கிலோ (pattu kilō), not 'kilos'.
The measure as a predicate. To say 'the length is three meters', Tamil puts the noun of the feature at the end with no verb at all: கயிற்றின்ர நீளம் மூண்டு மீற்றர் (kayiṟṟiṉra nīḷam mūṇḍu mīṟṟar). And to glue the measure onto the thing, it adds -ஆ (-ā): மூண்டு மீற்றர் நீளமா ஒரு கயிறு (mūṇḍu mīṟṟar nīḷamā oru kayiṟu) — 'a rope three meters long'. The same tail -ஆ which in wave 4 made an adverb out of a noun here makes a feature out of a measure.
They ask with two words. எவ்வளவு (evvaḷavu) — 'how much' about what is not counted piece by piece: எவ்வளவு நீளம் (evvaḷavu nīḷam)?, எவ்வளவு எடை (evvaḷavu eḍai)?, எவ்வளவு காசு (evvaḷavu kāsu)?. எத்தனை (ettaṉai) — 'how many' about items: எத்தனை பேர் (ettaṉai pēr)?, எத்தனை மீற்றர் (ettaṉai mīṟṟar)?. Confusing them is not fatal, but எத்தனை காசு (ettaṉai kāsu) sounds as odd as English 'how many money'.
Approximation is placed BEFORE the number, not after it as in English 'five meters or so'. ஏறத்தாள முப்பது பேர் (ēṟattāḷa muppadu pēr), கிட்டத்தட்ட ஒரு கிலோ (kiṭṭattaṭṭa oru kilō), சரியா ரெண்டு மணி (sariyā reṇḍu maṇi). There is a second way too, purely Tamil: two numbers in a row with the tail -ஓ — ரெண்டோ மூண்டோ நாள், 'two or three days'. And a third, for 'and more': -க்கு மேல after the number — பத்து கிலோக்கு மேல.
Multiple and repetition are different words, and this is a trap. மடங்கு (maḍaṅgu) multiplies: ரெண்டு மடங்கு விலை (reṇḍu maḍaṅgu vilai) 'the price is double'. தரம் (taram) counts times: ரெண்டு தரம் சொன்னேன் (reṇḍu taram soṉṉēṉ) 'I said it twice'. English 'twice as expensive' and 'said twice' sound alike; the Tamil ones do not.
