Let it be so: the wish and the form -அட்டும்
You already build commands: வாங்க 'come', செய்யாதேங்க 'do not do it'. A festival demands a third form the course has not reached yet — the wish. It is addressed not to the interlocutor but to fate, and in English it begins with 'let' or 'may'. For example: “உங்கட குடும்பம் நல்லா இருக்கட்டும்” — May everything be well for your family. How it works
You already build commands: வாங்க (vāṅga) 'come', செய்யாதேங்க 'do not do it'. A festival demands a third form the course has not reached yet — the wish. It is addressed not to the interlocutor but to fate, and in English it begins with 'let' or 'may'.
-அட்டும் — the live form, heard every day. Take the verb stem and hang -அட்டும் on it: வரட்டும் 'let him come', நடக்கட்டும் (naḍakkaṭṭum) 'let it happen', கடவுள் காப்பாத்தட்டும் (kaḍavuḷ kāppāttaṭṭum) 'may God protect'. The same ending also works as permission: அவர் போகட்டும் means both 'let him go (I bless it)' and 'let him go, then (I do not hold him)'. The voice tells them apart.
வாழ்க (vāḻka) — solemn and frozen. வாழ்க 'long live', வெல்க 'may it win', நீடூழி வாழ்க (nīḍūḻi vāḻka) 'long years of life'. This is an old optative form; new verbs are not put into it, and the learned ones are pronounced from a stage and written on a poster.
Ready-made greetings — nominal, with no verb at all. இனிய பிறந்தநாள் வாழ்த்துக்கள் (iṉiya piṟandanāḷ vāḻttukkaḷ) 'happy birthday', இனிய புத்தாண்டு (iṉiya puttāṇḍu) 'happy new year', எல்லாம் நல்லபடியா முடியட்டும் (ellām nallabaḍiyā muḍiyaṭṭum) 'may everything end well'. Notice: a Tamil greeting puts the noun of the wish, not an English preposition 'happy'; word for word it is 'sweet wishes of the birthday'.
And separately about condolences, because a mistake here is expensive. A wish in a house of mourning is not built through வாழ்த்து (vāḻttu) — that word is only for joy. One says ஆன்மா சாந்தியடையட்டும் 'may the soul find peace' or simply எங்கட இரங்கல் (eṅgaḍa iraṅgal) 'our condolences'. Saying வாழ்த்துக்கள் (vāḻttukkaḷ) in such a house gives you away completely.
