Smoking is harmful: how a verb becomes a noun
For an English speaker, saying 'smoking is harmful' takes only the -ing form. Tamil has no such form at all: only a noun can be a subject. So the verb is first turned into a noun, and there are three ways. For example: “சிகரெட் குடிக்கிறது உடம்புக்கு கெடுதி” — Smoking is harmful to health. A rule from the Tamil course: worked out on examples, not memorized as a wording.
How it works
For an English speaker, saying 'smoking is harmful' takes only the -ing form. Tamil has no such form at all: only a noun can be a subject. So the verb is first turned into a noun, and there are three ways.
-றது — the working, live, spoken one. Take the present tense and change the end to -றது: புகைப்பிடிக்கிறது (pugaippiḍikkiṟadu) 'smoking', நடக்கிறது (naḍakkiṟadu) 'walking', சொல்றது (solṟadu) 'saying'. Then it is an ordinary noun and declines like one: சொல்றது கஷ்டம் (solṟadu kaṣṭam) 'it is hard to say', புகைப்பிடிக்கிறதை விட்டிட்டேன் (pugaippiḍikkiṟadai viṭṭiṭṭēṉ) 'I gave up smoking' — with the object -ஐ, நடக்கிறது உடம்புக்கு நல்லது (naḍakkiṟadu uḍambukku nalladu) 'walking is good for the body'.
-தல் — the same, but bookish. நடத்தல், கண்டறிதல் (kaṇḍaṟidal), புகைப்பிடித்தல். You will hear it on a notice and in the law; you will hardly say it yourself. The pair புகைப்பிடித்தல் தடை on a wall and புகைப்பிடிக்கிறது கூடாது (pugaippiḍikkiṟadu kūḍādu) in conversation — one and the same.
-ப்பு and -வு — ready-made nouns to be memorized. This is already not a form but a separate word, and its meaning is often narrower than the verb's: கண்டுபிடி → கண்டுபிடிப்பு (kaṇḍubiḍippu) 'invention', ஆய் → ஆய்வு (āyvu) 'research', விளை → விளைவு (viḷaivu) 'result', கழி → கழிவு (kaḻivu) 'waste'. Such a word stands in the dictionary on its own, and it cannot be predicted.
Why this is needed at B1. Without the action noun half the turns of this wave are not built: சொல்றது கஷ்டம், காத்திருக்கிறது தான் மோசம் (kāttirukkiṟadu tāṉ mōsam), நடக்கிறதுக்குப் பதிலா, படிக்கிறதுக்காக. All of them are the same noun in -றது in different cases. Having learned the device once, you get all of them at once.

How the rule settles in your head
A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.
