How it works
The fortieth unit introduces twenty professions, and almost all of them are assembled, not memorized: Tamil takes the name of the work and glues onto it an ending of a person. There are four endings, and they are not interchangeable.
-காரர் — the liveliest. It fits almost anything: கடை (kaḍai) shop gives கடைக்காரர் (kaḍaikkārar) shopkeeper, தோட்டம் (tōṭṭam) garden — தோட்டக்காரர் (tōṭṭakkārar) gardener, தையல் (taiyal) sewing — தையல்காரர் (taiyalkārar) tailor, கடன் (kaḍaṉ) debt — கடன்காரர் (kaḍaṉkārar) lender. It also takes English words whole: பேக்கரிக்காரர் (bēkkarikkārar) baker. The female form is -காரி, and the rough male one is -காரன்: மோசடிக்காரன் (mōsaḍikkāraṉ) swindler. The difference between -காரர் and -காரன் is not in gender but in respect, and the mistake is heard at once.
-ஆளர் — bookish and clerical. செயல் (seyal) work gives செயலாளர் (seyalāḷar) secretary, கணக்கு (kaṇakku) account — கணக்காளர் (kaṇakkāḷar) accountant, எழுத்து (eḻuttu) writing — எழுத்தாளர் (eḻuttāḷar) writer. This ending loves long learned stems and dislikes English words: they will not say சப்ளையாளர், they will say simply சப்ளையர் (sapḷaiyar).
-ஞர் and -வோர். -ஞர் gives a master of an art: கலைஞர், இசைக்கலைஞர் (isaikkalaiñar), கவிஞர் (kaviñar). -வோர் is a polite form indifferent to number: தொழில் முனைவோர் (toḻil muṉaivōr) means both 'an entrepreneur' and 'entrepreneurs', and that is not a typo.
And now the main thing: 'to work as'. English puts 'as a mechanic'. Tamil puts -ஆ (bookish -ஆக), that same adverbial ending from wave 4: மெக்கானிக்கா வேலை செய்யுறேன் (mekkāṉikkā vēlai seyyuṟēṉ) — word for word 'mechanic-ly I work'. Roles and capacities work the same way: நண்பனா வந்தார் he came as a friend, தன்னார்வலரா வேலை செய்யுறாங்க (taṉṉārvalarā vēlai seyyuṟāṅga) they work as volunteers.
And two turns for every day. To ask about occupation — என்ன வேலை பாக்கிறீங்க (eṉṉa vēlai pākkiṟīṅga)?, word for word 'what work are you looking at'. To say what one has become — ஆகு: அவர் மெக்கானிக் ஆனார் (avar mekkāṉik āṉār) he became a mechanic, and here -ஆ is no longer needed.
