In the forty-first unit half of the actions look alike: ரத்து பண்ணுறேன் (rattu paṇṇuṟēṉ), முதலீடு பண்ணுறேன் (mudalīḍu paṇṇuṟēṉ), ஓடர் பண்ணினேன் (ōḍar paṇṇiṉēṉ), கையெழுத்து போடுறேன் (kaiyeḻuttu pōḍuṟēṉ). This is not chance but Tamil's main way of taking in the new: a noun plus a service verb. The language has long almost stopped coining verbs of its own.
பண்ணு — 'do', the workhorse of speech. Anything attaches to it: bookish Tamil (ரத்து பண்ணு cancel, முதலீடு பண்ணு invest), Sanskrit borrowings (விசாரணை பண்ணு hold an inquiry), English ones (கன்பாம் பண்ணு confirm, ஓடர் பண்ணு place an order, போன் பண்ணு phone). In the bookish language செய் stands in its place, and ரத்து செய்தார் is the same thing said with a newspaper intonation.
போடு (pōḍa) — 'put', and it is not a synonym. போடு takes what is put, placed or applied: கையெழுத்து போடுறேன் I sign (put a signature), ஊசி போட்டார் (ūsi pōṭṭār) he gave an injection, கட்டு போடுறது to put on a cast, சுவரொட்டி போடுறாங்க (suvaroṭṭi pōḍuṟāṅga) they put up a poster. Saying கையெழுத்து பண்ணுறேன் (kaiyeḻuttu paṇṇuṟēṉ) is impossible — it sounds like 'manufacturing a signature'.
Three more service verbs worth recognizing. அடி (aḍi) — a sharp action: விசில் அடிச்சார் (visil aḍiccār) he blew a whistle, காத்து அடிக்குது (kāttu aḍikkudu) the wind blows. எடு — take and start, hire: படம் எடுக்கிறார் (paḍam eḍukkiṟār) he films, வேலைக்கு எடுத்தாங்க (vēlaikku eḍuttāṅga) they hired. கிடை — 'to come one's way', and it is impersonal: பதக்கம் கிடைச்சுது (padakkam kiḍaiccudu) the medal came his way, not 'he received'.
How this glues with the cases. A service verb behaves like an ordinary one: the noun before it stands bare, and everything else takes its own endings. நான் கடையில முதலீடு பண்ணுறேன் (nāṉ kaḍaiyila mudalīḍu paṇṇuṟēṉ) — 'at the shop' stands in the locative, முதலீடு (mudalīḍu) is bare, and only பண்ணு conjugates. The negation also falls on the service verb: ரத்து பண்ணேல்லை did not cancel.
