- Pred letom dni sem se vpisala na tečaj slovenščine kot popolna začetnica. Prvi mesec sem se učila besede vsak večer, slovnica pa mi je šla zelo težko. Učiteljica je imela eno samo pripombo: premalo govorim in preveč pišem. Poleti sem dva tedna delala v kavarni in tam sem razumela, da rabim več prakse. Jeseni sem prvič razumela cel pogovor po sluhu in mi je končno uspelo. Zdaj še ne govorim tekoče, a napredek je viden in tečaja ne bom pustila na pol poti.A year ago I signed up for a Slovenian course as a complete beginner. For the first month I learned words every evening, and grammar came to me very hard. The teacher had one single remark: I speak too little and write too much. In summer I worked two weeks at a café and there realized I needed more practice. In autumn I understood a whole conversation by ear for the first time, and it finally worked out. I don’t speak fluently yet, but the progress is visible, and I won’t abandon the course halfway.

How to read a text in an unfamiliar language usefully?
First all the way through without peeking at the translation — just to catch the familiar words. Then with the translation. Then all the way through again: the second pass brings noticeably more, and that feeling matters more than any rule.
