Sosed z drugega nadstropja

A short in Slovenian text at level A2. The translation sits next to it: reading with a dictionary is still too early at this level, and without support it will not happen at all. In our building lives Mr. Peter, a gray-haired man of medium height. He has a thick beard, fine wrinkles around the…

Text

In our building lives Mr. Peter, a gray-haired man of medium height. He has a thick beard, fine wrinkles around the eyes and always a calm face. The neighbors say he is stingy because he never comes with us for coffee. In fact he is simply modest and would rather keep silent than talk about himself. Last year he spent a whole week driving a sick neighbor to the doctor and told nobody about it. Since I have known this, he seems to me the most reliable person in the building.

Comprehension questions

The questions are asked in Russian on purpose: we test your understanding of the text, not your ability to read the question.

  1. What does Mr. Peter look like?
  2. Why do the neighbors consider him stingy?
  3. What did he do last year?
  4. What did he turn out to be in fact?

Frequently asked

What level do you need to read this text in Slovenian?

A2. That means: you know the letters and have a stock of everyday words — about two or three hundred.

How to read a text in an unfamiliar language usefully?

First all the way through without peeking at the translation — just to catch the familiar words. Then with the translation. Then all the way through again: the second pass brings noticeably more, and that feeling matters more than any rule.
