A short in Slovenian text at level A2. The translation sits next to it: reading with a dictionary is still too early at this level, and without support it will not happen at all. We two rented the new apartment unfurnished, so we had to buy almost everything. First we bought a bed, a sofa and a…

Text

  • Novo stanovanje sva najela brez pohištva, zato sva morala kupiti skoraj vse. Najprej sva kupila posteljo, kavč in mizo, ker brez tega ne gre. Kavč sva našla rabljen in je bil trikrat cenejši od novega. Preprogo, zavese in ogledalo sva kupila kasneje, ko sva imela spet nekaj denarja. Police je sosed pomagal pritrditi na steno, ker imava le izvijač, vrtalnika pa ne. Zdaj manjka samo še lestenec v dnevni sobi, a zaenkrat je dovolj navadna svetilka.
We two rented the new apartment unfurnished, so we had to buy almost everything. First we bought a bed, a sofa and a table, because there is no way without them. We found the sofa second-hand, and it was three times cheaper than a new one. We bought the carpet, the curtains and the mirror later, when we had money again. A neighbor helped attach the shelves to the wall, because we only have a screwdriver and no drill. Now only the chandelier in the living room is missing, but for now an ordinary lamp is enough.

Comprehension questions

The questions are asked in Russian on purpose: we test your understanding of the text, not your ability to read the question.

  1. What kind of apartment did they rent?
  2. What did they buy first?
  3. Why was the sofa cheap?
  4. Why did the neighbor help with the shelves?

Frequently asked

What level do you need to read this text in Slovenian?

A2. That means: you know the letters and have a stock of everyday words — about two or three hundred.

How to read a text in an unfamiliar language usefully?

First all the way through without peeking at the translation — just to catch the familiar words. Then with the translation. Then all the way through again: the second pass brings noticeably more, and that feeling matters more than any rule.
