New Year is our biggest holiday, and every year we meet it in the village. Grandma prepares the feast from early morning, because many relatives come. In the evening we decorate the tree, light candles and exchange gifts. At midnight there are fireworks, and then we congratulate each other on the New Year. On January seventh it's Christmas, and the alilo goes through the city: a procession from church to church.

Comprehension questions

The questions are asked in Russian on purpose: we test your understanding of the text, not your ability to read the question.

  1. Where does the family meet New Year?
  2. Why does grandma cook from the morning?
  3. What do they do in the evening?
  4. What happens on January seventh?

Frequently asked

What level do you need to read this text in Georgian?

A2. That means: you know the letters and have a stock of everyday words — about two or three hundred.

How to read a text in an unfamiliar language usefully?

First all the way through without peeking at the translation — just to catch the familiar words. Then with the translation. Then all the way through again: the second pass brings noticeably more, and that feeling matters more than any rule.
