It was cold yesterday: the past with one swap

Good news worth hearing before you open any conjugation table: to move a story into the past, the verb itself is left alone. The -ում form stays exactly as it was; only the linker changes: եմ → էի, ես → էիր, է → էր. Աշխատում եմ — I work, աշխատում էի — I was working. For example: “Երեկ ես տանն էի” — Yesterday I was at home. A rule from the Armenian course: worked out on examples, not memorized as a wording.

How it works

Good news worth hearing before you open any conjugation table: to move a story into the past, the verb itself is left alone. The -ում (-um) form stays exactly as it was; only the linker changes: եմ (em) → էի (ei), ես (yes) → էիր, է (e) → էր (er). Աշխատում եմ (ashkhatum em) — I work, աշխատում էի (ashkhatum ei) — I was working.

This is the unfinished past: what stretched on or repeated. It is exactly the tense for weather, memories and routines: Ամռանը շոգ էր (amrranə shog er), Անցած տարի Երևանում էի աշխատում (antsats tari Yerevanum ei ashkhatum). English reaches for 'was/were + -ing' here; Armenian reaches for the same linker, past tense.

For a single completed action there is a separate past — գնացի (went), ասաց (said) — but there is no rush: the էի linker covers most everyday storytelling.

One caveat about the weather. 'It's raining' is անձրև է գալիս (andzrev e galis), where the verb գալ (gal) takes the odd form գալիս (galis) instead of 'գալում'. In the past it behaves just as obediently: անձրև էր գալիս (andzrev er galis) — it was raining.

How the rule settles in your head

A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.

It was cold yesterday: how does it work in Armenian?

Good news worth hearing before you open any conjugation table: to move a story into the past, the verb itself is left alone. The -ում form stays exactly as it was; only the linker changes: եմ → էի, ես → էիր, է → էր. Աշխատում եմ — I work, աշխատում էի — I was working.

What does it look like in an example sentence Armenian?

“Երեկ ես տանն էի” (yerek yes tann ei) — Yesterday I was at home. A rule is easier to test on sentences like this than to memorize as a wording: what surfaces in conversation is the sentence.
