Where? The -ում ending and one verb trap

'In the room', 'in the kitchen', 'in the city' — Armenian manages without a preposition. The word simply takes the ending -ում: սենյակ → սենյակում, խանութ → խանութում, Երևան → Երևանում. Think of English 'in' fused onto the word itself. For example: “Ես խոհանոցում եմ” — I'm in the kitchen. A rule from the Armenian course: worked out on examples, not memorized as a wording.

How it works

'In the room', 'in the kitchen', 'in the city' — Armenian manages without a preposition. The word simply takes the ending -ում (-um): սենյակ (senyak) → սենյակում (senyakum), խանութ (khanut') → խանութում (khanut'um), Երևան (Yerevan) → Երևանում (Yerevanum). Think of English 'in' fused onto the word itself.

And here is the trap that makes the rule look harder than it is: verbs already showed you the same -ումաշխատում եմ (ashkhatum em), գնում եմ (gnum em). The shapes coincide completely, but nothing gets confused: the word itself tells you whether it is a place or an action. Ես խանութում եմ (yes khanut'um em) — 'I am in the shop', Ես աշխատում եմ (yes ashkhatum em) — 'I am working'.

Exceptions are few, and the main one comes up every day: տուն (tun) does not give 'տունում' but տանը (tanə) — 'at home'. And one more: people are not counted this way. 'At the doctor's' is not 'բժիշկում' but բժշկի մոտ (bzhshki mot), with the separate word մոտ (mot) — literally 'near the doctor'.

How the rule settles in your head

A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.

What does it look like in an example sentence Armenian?

“Ես խոհանոցում եմ” (yes khohanotsum em) — I'm in the kitchen. A rule is easier to test on sentences like this than to memorize as a wording: what surfaces in conversation is the sentence.
