The monthly budget
A short in Armenian text at level A2. The translation sits next to it: reading with a dictionary is still too early at this level, and without support it will not happen at all. At the beginning of the month my wife and I sit down and make the family budget. We write the income in the left…
Text
- Ամսվա սկզբին կինս և ես նստում ենք և ընտանեկան բյուջեն ենք կազմում: Եկամուտը գրում ենք ձախ կողմում, ծախսերը՝ աջ: Ամենամեծ ծախսը վարձավճարն է, հետո՝ սնունդը և կոմունալ վճարները: Այս տարի գները շատ են բարձրացել, ուստի ավելի շատ ենք խնայում: Ամեն ամիս մոտ հիսուն հազար դրամ ենք կուտակում ճամփորդության համար: Անցյալ ամիս գումարը չէր բավականացնում, և ընկերոջից փող պարտք վերցրի: Պարտքը երկու շաբաթ անց վերադարձրի, և այդ ամիսը ավելի զգույշ անցկացրինք:amsva skzbin kins yev yes nstum enk' yev əntanekan byujen enk' kazmum. yekamutə grum enk' dzakh koghmum, tsakhserə — aj. amenamets tsakhsə vardzavcharn e, heto — snundə yev komunal vcharnerə. ays tari gnerə shat en bardzratsel, usti aveli shat enk' khnayum. amen amis mot hisun hazar dram enk' kutakum champ'ordut'yan hamar. antsyal amis gumarə cher bavakanatsnum, yev ənkerojits p'ogh partk' vertsri. partk'ə yerku shabat' ants veradardzri, yev ayd amisə aveli zguysh antskatsrink'.At the beginning of the month my wife and I sit down and make the family budget. We write the income in the left column, the expenses — in the right. The biggest expense is the rent, then food and utility bills. This year prices have risen a lot, so we save more. Every month we put aside about fifty thousand drams for a trip. Last month the money wasn't enough, and I borrowed from a friend. I returned the debt two weeks later, and we spent that month more carefully.
Comprehension questions
The questions are asked in Russian on purpose: we test your understanding of the text, not your ability to read the question.
- Which expense is the family's biggest?
- Why did the family start saving more?
- What are they saving money for?
- What happened last month?
Frequently asked
What level do you need to read this text in Armenian?
A2. That means: you know the letters and have a stock of everyday words — about two or three hundred.
How to read a text in an unfamiliar language usefully?
First all the way through without peeking at the translation — just to catch the familiar words. Then with the translation. Then all the way through again: the second pass brings noticeably more, and that feeling matters more than any rule.
