Text

  • İstanbulda dört mevsim var. Yaz çok sıcak ve nemli, kış ise soğuk ve yağmurlu. Kar nadiren yağar, ama yağınca bütün şehir durur. Ben en çok ilkbaharı seviyorum: hava ılık ve her yer yeşil.
There are four seasons in Istanbul. The summer is very hot and humid, and the winter is cold and rainy. Snow rarely falls, but when it does, the whole city stops. I love spring most of all: the weather is warm and there is green everywhere.

Comprehension questions

The questions are asked in Russian on purpose: we test your understanding of the text, not your ability to read the question.

  3. Which season does he love most?

Frequently asked

What level do you need to read this text in Turkish?

A1. That means: you know the letters and have a stock of everyday words — about two or three hundred.

How to read a text in an unfamiliar language usefully?

First all the way through without peeking at the translation — just to catch the familiar words. Then with the translation. Then all the way through again: the second pass brings noticeably more, and that feeling matters more than any rule.
