Drops and Lingofly: how they differ and which to choose
Drops teaches words with picture cards, five minutes a day — grammar and texts are absent by design. Of our rare languages its list has two, Serbian and Basque: Armenian, Georgian, Kazakh, Slovenian, Maldivian, Sinhala, Tamil and Valencian are not there. Greek, Turkish, Spanish and Catalan are. How the approach differs
Words with no language around them
Drops honestly does one thing: it builds vocabulary with pictures. No grammar, no phrases for talking, no texts — and that is not a complaint, it is the design. For us, a word with no example and no phrasebook around it is half the job.
Languages
Of our rare ten, Drops has two: Serbian and Basque. The other eight — Armenian, Georgian, Kazakh, Slovenian, Maldivian, Sinhala, Tamil and Valencian — are absent from its list. Catalan is on it. Their course addresses are not the ones you would guess: languagedrops.com/learn-basque answers 404, and the course lives at /language/learn-basque, so this has to be checked through the links in their own list.
Time
Five minutes a day is Drops’ strong side and also its ceiling. We think twenty minutes split into three or four sittings is realistic, and we say what a month of that gives you: reading the alphabet and about a hundred everyday words.
Where Drops is stronger
As a vocabulary drill Drops is better made than most: the pictures, the rhythm and the feel of it really do build a word stock in five minutes a day. If vocabulary is what you want and it has your language, it does its job.
Which to choose
A word stock in Serbian, Basque, Greek or Turkish — Drops works as a supplement. Reading, understanding and speaking — that needs a course, and for eight of our rare languages there is none there at all.
