Busuu and Lingofly: how they differ and which to choose

Busuu has fourteen languages, and it is exactly the list everyone has: English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Polish, Dutch, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Turkish. Of the fourteen languages checked here it carries two — Spanish and Turkish. The other twelve, from Armenian to Valencian, are not there at all. Below: the table, and what Busuu does better than we do.

How the approach differs

The languages it does not have

None of the ten rare languages on this site is in Busuu, and neither is Greek or Catalan: its fourteen are the same fourteen on the English, Russian and Spanish versions of its home page, and busuu.com/en/learn-catalan answers 404. Its set assumes people will learn the most widely spoken languages, and within that set it is good.

Corrected by people

Busuu’s strong side is exercises corrected by native speakers from its community. We do not do that and do not promise it: here pronunciation is scored by a program, and written work is not checked by anyone.

Writing and audio

Where a language has its own alphabet, everything starts there. Here the alphabet is a section of its own, with audio on every sign and a tracing drill; Busuu’s set has almost no languages with their own script apart from Arabic, Japanese, Korean and Chinese.

Where Busuu is stronger

In Spanish, German, French and Turkish, Busuu does something we do not do at all: live correction of written work by native speakers, and CEFR levels with a certificate at the end. If you need one of its fourteen languages and you want feedback from a human being, it is a strong choice.

Which to choose

This comparison is ours, and we are a party in it. You can check it in one click: the Busuu language list is open to everyone, and the date it was checked is above.
