The materials unit runs into three prepositions that English spreads over 'of', 'from' and 'with' — and Slovenian splits them cleanly. The mistake here is audible at once.
Iz plus the genitive — material and origin: torbica iz usnja, pulover iz volne, sok iz jabolk. The same preposition answers 'where from': iz Ljubljane, iz službe. Easiest to remember through the thing itself: the object has come out of the substance.
Z / s plus the instrumental — what it was done with: rezati z nožem, zalepiti z lepilnim trakom, plačati s kartico. The choice between z and s is pure phonetics, no meaning: s before the voiceless p, t, k, s, š, c, č, f, h, z before everything else. s kartico, but z lepilom. The same z also means 'together with': z ženo.
Od plus the genitive — from whom and since when: darilo od babice, recept od mame, od ponedeljka. English 'from grandma' maps one to one here, so the confusion only runs the other way: 'made of wood' can never be od lesa.
The fourth way skips the preposition altogether — a material adjective: usnjena jakna, volnen pulover, steklena skodelica, plastična vrečka. In shops and on labels this one dominates, while iz keeps to live speech. Both are correct, but do not mix them in one phrase: jakna iz usnja or usnjena jakna, but not usnjena jakna iz usnja.
