Pri- — approach and attachment: prilepiti, priviti, prinesti, pripeljati. Od- — the reverse action and removal: odlepiti, odviti, odnesti, odpeljati. This pair works almost mechanically, and English 'attach / detach', 'screw on / unscrew' follows the same line.
Pre- — over the limit or straight through: pregrevati se (to overheat), preplačati (to overpay), prebrati (to read through to the end). English 'over-' is a good anchor here. But po- disappoints meaning-hunters: most often it simply makes the verb complete — pogreti, popraviti, pokvariti se — and is not translated by any separate word.
An important consequence to keep in mind from the very start: a prefix almost always makes the verb perfective. lepiti — to glue (the process), prilepiti — to glue on (the result). That is why the manual says Privij vijak, not Vij vijak: a result is wanted.
And one trap people stumble into for years. odpustiti — to sack from a job, oprostiti — to forgive. The roots are different, but to the ear they nearly coincide, and the person who meant to apologize suddenly sacks the interlocutor. Keep them apart from day one.
